Melt Flow Index

The Melt Flow Index (MFI) is used for the characterisation of thermoplastics in industry. This states which mass [g] of a polymer sample is extruded through a capillary, at a constant temperature [°C] under a certain test load [kg] in 10 minutes. The polymer sample can be fed in the form of a powder or granulate. If the MFI is divided by the density of the melt, this produces the Melt Volume Index, MVI. The MFI and MVI measure the shear-dependent fluidity of the polymer melt. The higher the molar mass of the polymer, the lower these values will be.
